Tutorials, Labs, and Directed Study

Special Courses in Theater Studies

In addition to regularly scheduled courses, Theater Studies offers opportunities for tutorials, laboratories, and directed studies. These courses are sometimes connected to work at Theater Emory.

Tutorials

Tutorials courses are individual opportunities for specialized instruction.

Tutorials require:
  1. permission of an instructor, and
  2. approval of the instructor's plan for the tutorial by the Academic Committee.
This must be secured by the end of the drop/add period for the semester during which the course is taught.

Tutorial courses available:
  • THEA 419R (Dramaturgy)
  • THEA 420R (Acting)
  • THEA 431R (Costume Design)
  • THEA 432R (Scene Design)
  • THEA 433R (Lighting Design)
  • THEA 434R (Sound Design)

Laboratories

Laboratory courses are offered to students undertaking responsibilities at Theater Emory.

  • THEA 300R: Production Assistantship (variable credit, may be repeated up to 8 hours)

  • THEA 320R: Acting Laboratory (variable credit, may be repeated up to 10 hours)
    • Students who perform in a Theater Emory production may receive two credits upon completion of an evaluation form that reflects on the experience. Actors in a shorter-term project may have the option of enrolling for one credit.

    • When a dramatic literature course has a performance laboratory attached to it, this course may be used for additional credit.

  • THEA 330R: Stagecraft Laboratory (variable credit, may be repeated up to 4 hours)
    • An advanced tutorial on practical problems in properties and craftwork for theater.

    • Prerequisite: Theater 130 or permission of instructor.

  • 400R Theater Emory Laboratory (variable credit, may be repeated up to 8 hours)
    • For work with Theater Emory as playwright, director, designer, dramaturg, or lead actor.

Directed Study

Directed Study facilitates individual study in areas of academic interest, to award academic credit for supervised internships, and, under compelling circumstances (as may occur for transfer students or students who have studied abroad), to provide for the replacement of a requirement in the major with supervised individual study.

Directed Study requires:
  1. permission of an instructor, and
  2. approval of the instructor's plan for the tutorial by the Academic Committee.
  3. This must be secured by the end of the drop/add period for the semester during which the course is taught.
  • THEA 397R: Directed Studies in Theater (variable credit, may be repeated up to 12 hours)
    • Special Projects, research, and readings under the direction of a faculty member.

    • A supervised project in any area of theater for seniors.
